You should call Triple Zero (000) if the situation is an emergency
Triple Zero (000) is the number to call for ambulance, police or fire services in an emergency. Always remember, getting medical help quickly for a medical emergency can save a person’s life.
Do I need an ambulance?
If it’s an emergency, it’s best to call Triple Zero (000) rather than drive to hospital. Not only is it safer, paramedics can start treating a patient when they arrive. While every Triple Zero (000) caller is given assistance, it is important to remember that this number is for emergencies only. If you are unsure, call Triple Zero (000) and have the situation assessed.
You should call Triple Zero (000) if you or someone else is experiencing the following symptoms:
- Chest pain or tightness
- Breathing difficulties
- Uncontrollable bleeding
- Severe burns
- Poisoning
- Unconsciousness or seizures
- Numbness or paralysis
- A life-threatening injury
- On-going fever in infants
- Unresponsive

What happens when I call Triple Zero (000)?
When you call Triple Zero (000) you will be asked; "Do you require Police, Fire or Ambulance?". When you are transferred to Ambulance, you may be asked the following questions:
- What is the address of the emergency? A street address or landmark is helpful.
- What is the telephone number you are calling from? This is in case your call drops out or further information is required.
- Tell me exactly what has happened? Provide a brief description of the problem.
- How old is is the patient? If unknown, you can estimate their age.
- Is the patient awake (conscious)? Yes or no answer required.
- Is the patient breathing? Yes or no answer required.
You will then be asked a series of further questions more specific to the situation. Answering these questions will ensure the most appropriate ambulance response is provided. You will also recieve advice over the phone to assist the patient prior to the arrival of an ambulance.
